June 2023 – Jane McGaughey and Gabrielle Machnik-Kekesi have, along with co-editors Thomas Walker and Victoria Kelly, edited an interdisciplinary collection entitled, Environmental Migration in the Face of Emerging Risks (Palgrave, 2023), focusing on historical and contemporary case studies of how migration patterns have affected and been affected by environmental risks including famine, flood, soil erosion, and climate change. The edition features a chapter by GMM Project RA Giselle Gonzalez-Garcia on her research regarding Irish migration to Cuba and the environmental consequences of colonial coffee plantations.
May 2023 – Jane McGaughey, Giselle Gonzalez-Garcia, and Gabrielle Machnik-Kekesi all presented their research at the CAIS 2023 annual conference at the University of Ottawa. Jane’s paper, “Sex, Masturbation, and ‘Other Evils Existing in Society’: Dr Joseph Workman and the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, 1853-1868” focused directly on GMM Project findings, while Giselle’s paper, “Coffee Plantations and Irish Migrations to Santiago de Cuba” drew on her recently-published chapter in the collected edition, Environmental Migration in the Face of Emerging Risks (2023), and Gabrielle presented on, “‘Food as Medicine and Medicine as Food’: Towards locating Irish food culture in the National Folklore Collection’s Schools’ Collection.” We are delighted to add that Gabrielle won the award for the best paper by a PhD candidate at the conference!
