….One year later…
Well, we’re back!
Really, we didn’t go away, we just did a deep dive into academia and teaching and research and tried to move away a bit from social media and the internet. And I launched a podcast, which has been brilliant, but extraordinarily time-consuming. And fun. And rather frightening in its ability to side-line many things outside of the classroom and real life.
We’ve revamped a fair bit of the website to kick things off again now in the Summer of 2023. Our aim remains the same: the GMM Project still focuses on how Irish men and women were treated in Canadian colonial lunatic asylums; however, we’ve now put a lot of thoughts together in various conference papers, journal article drafts, and new visualizations, so this is less of a beginning and more of a middle-of-the-journey ride.
A few things to look for as you make your way around the website:
- “The News” section is actually updated to reflect what we’ve been doing! There have been various publications and achievements across the team that we want to highlight and celebrate!
- mini-bios of asylum patients — including perhaps our most famous individual admission, Grace Marks — that will appear each week over the summer, including visualizations of their journeys from Ireland to Canada, why they were institutionalized, and what happened during their time in the asylum
- the wonderful additions of Lily MacLean and Victoria Kelly to the Research Team!
- regular weekly posts and tweets about what we’ve found, what we’re still questioning, and what we’re wanting to do next
- new Research Radar features
- The Irish in Canada Podcast did a special episode all about the GMM Project, which you can find here
- COMING SOON ~ a new section for the second-stage of this research: “Mothers in the Time of Cholera.” Eventually, it might get its own independent site, but, for now, you can find out about explorations of what happened to immigrant mothers on their arrival in the Canadian colonial medical system
Please check back every Tuesday and Thursday over the summer for new highlights and features!
Sincerely,
The GMM Project Research Team, June 2023
